Forough Amin from Iranian Women in NZ is calling on the Government to condemn the Iranian government’s actions.
Dr Forough Amin, founder of the Iranian Women in New Zealand Charitable Trust, says the Government’s decision to suspend human rights dialogue with Iran is “encouraging”, but the move doesn’t go far enough.
Protests in Iran ignited by the death of Mahsa Amini are in their fourth week and are now considered the most serious challenge to the Islamic Republic since its inception in 1979. But despite its importance, Dr Forough Amin, founder of Iranian Women in NZ says this “revolution has not received the attention and support deserved from western feminists and women’s rights activists especially.
The Government has announced a travel ban on 22 Iranian security force members following the death of Mahsa Amini and the “violent” response to subsequent protests.  But Iranian Women in New Zealand founder and chairperson Forough Amin says the announcement is ” very disappointing” and believes the Government is being “too cautious”.
Reports coming out of Iran suggest the country’s controversial morality police are being disbanded. Iran has seen months of protest over the death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for not wearing her hijab correctly. Iran’s attorney general has also been quoted as saying the law regarding hijabs is being reviewed, but there’s no independent confirmation yet of either claim. Rights campaigner Forough Amin spoke to Newshub Late.
